Week 5 – Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to Ring the Bell

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 10.17.38 pm

The start of Week 5. I am a bit flat coming into this week. I greatly missed my family over the week and also got very little sleep…. My previously peaceful hostel turned into a party hostel and I did not cope well!

Last night however it appeared to be back to normal. No noise after 11pm so I was able to fall asleep and get a decent night in.

So what happened last week.

If you remember I was meant to do the 35 min run on Thursday but I ended up not getting it in. No excuses really but finally managed to get in it on Sunday morning. I really should take my camera out on some of my morning runs because the sun rising and the groups of elderly Chinese men and women doing Tai Chi was a magical sight.

I also stupidly arrived at yoga 30 mins late and was locked out of the practice. My own practice is never as intense. Becoming a qualified yoga teacher will assist in my own ability to put together a brilliant routine for myself – and others!!!!

This week may also get twisted around a bit.

I have got to get in contact with the coach and sort a few things out! It is my last full week in Penang as well so I am mindful of the fact I really haven’t seen much of the place! I am going to go exploring on Saturday and Sunday. Hoping to get my yoga as well as a trip to one of the National Park’s in on Sunday.

I have also realised my obsession with Indian food must stop! It is way too heavy to be eating when training for an ultra marathon. I am very grateful that I have found The Leaf Healthy House because they have brilliant healthy and light meals all seem to follow Chinese Medicine principles. Each time I eat there I feel nourished and healthy. The Indian is making me feel bloated and heavy! Oh but I do love it!!! It might have to be a Sunday night treat as The Leaf Healthy House is closed on Sundays!

The weather doesn’t look like it is going to be nice. Then again after watching a number of people from the squad I belong to back home race at the Port Macquarie IRONMAN over the weekend, well I have nothing to complain about! Watching them cross the finish also reminded me that 2017 is going to be a big IRONMAN year for me! I am tingling with excitement so nailing all these sessions and finishing 2016 with some massive results will mean 2017 is an amazing race year for me!

So back to work and training for me! What are your training plans for the week?

Week 4 – Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to Ring the Bell

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 10.17.38 pmTalk about having a much better week!!!

Firstly sorry this post is going up a day late – both my coach and I are Australian Army Veterans and yesterday was ANZAC Day so that took precedent over blogging.

But back to my better week! I managed to log a very substantial training week and my body is feeling very good! Note the swimming just hasn’t happened over the last 2 weeks. It would take me 2 hours to get to the pool, the reviews are poor for the actual pool and the water near where I am – pollution and disgusting!!!!

But the rest of it has been actually really good and I will put this down to a couple of things:

  • Yin Yoga! As most of you will know I love my Yin Yoga and I think it is the perfect complement to any endurance athletes bag of tricks!
  • Positive eating! I have been eating fairly well and feeling very good about what is going in my body. That said I am wondering if I have have a couple more sensitives with food than I realised – see picture below!
  • Realising how much I care about my goals and my body. So I had a bit of a realisation that while my race goals only really mean a lot to a few people but they are also important to my well-being. I have found that by having crazy goals and achieving them I flourish in other areas of my life. I guess you could say I am more in-balance when I am training for something crazy! Caring about my body is not about if I have no cellulite or the perfect butt but it is about knowing I am treating my body well. It is my temple and it loves to be healthy!
  • Spending most of my runs focusing on technique and using my running time as meditative time!

So what does this week look like:

As you can see I have already done a massive hike to commemorate ANZAC Day. What you don’t know is that I walked another 4-5km afterwards trying to find somewhere to get a pedicure! No pedicure but I do have a blister and I am pretty sure my feet hate me! The rest of the week is lower in volume but I have to say a 7km effort is freaking me out but today is Tuesday so just focusing on that!

Check out the weather though!! OMG I hate humidity but it is giving me an excuse to drink extra coconut water!!

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 9.53.15 amI am looking forward to this lower volume training week so that next week I am fresh for the next evolution!

What is on your training plan for this week? Let me know your challenges, goals and frustrations!

Week 2 – Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to ‘Ring the Bell’

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 10.17.38 pmLast week I decided to publicly commit to my training program and to update people on how each week went. So how did Week 1 go? See for yourself…

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 9.51.23 am

As you can see the week started off swimmingly and then come Friday I was not feeling well at all.  During Friday and Sundays workouts I was not feeling at all well. Friday I sensed that I was beginning to get unwell…to make matters worse I didn’t fully listen to my body and mind and went out on Friday night.

It was my last night in Kuala Lumpur with my friends and I didn’t want to stay home but stupidly instead of coming home after dinner I stayed out. I was already feeling under the weather so staying out till 3am (I never do this!) was plainly stupid!

Live and learn!

Saturday was a travel day which means I had 3 hours sleep and crap food. Saturday night I didn’t sleep well and come Sunday’s run I was sitting in the gutter dizzy and thinking I might pass out. I returned to the hostel and slept again. I spent the rest of the day drinking water, eating much better food and resting. I did go for a little stroll around George Town but didn’t push myself at all.

So Week 2 is upon me and I am feeling much better. In fact I got 10 hours sleep last night. Not sure if that is over sleeping but it has worked for me cause I feel pumped and rejuvenated today.

The swimming pool is proving difficult to find so that session may have to be later in the week. There is a pool but getting anyone to answer and give me a straight answer on timings is the difficult bit but I am still excited! Also tracking down yoga in town is proving a pain too. Two places used to have yoga but don’t anymore cause no-one wanted to do it… People no excuse!

Good news, I have started working at a co-working space in George Town, Penang therefore I am debating staying in Penang for month. So far, aside from the bloody humidity, it is proving cost effective and there are some great running trails (apparently) outside of town that I can explore on the weekend. For a month co-working space (desk and very fast internet is costing me $35.00 Australian! Pretty happy with that!

The weather forecast is not as happy!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.58.12 amOh and the UV Index for the week is 11…. I didn’t even know the UV Index went to 11 for Pete’s sake! Hot, sweating and burning.. Ah got to love life.

What are your fitness goals this week?

Blessed Be
