Week 6: Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to Ring the Bell

Some weeks are a little harder than others! Despite some really good things happening last week including this:

IRONMAN Certified Coach - Robyn Caddell

Can you believe it? I am an IRONMAN Certified Coach! I am working on my first program for an amazingly talented athlete and look forward to seeing what she can do on her first IRONMAN 70.3.

But back to Blackall. I was extremely slow this week. Not one run felt in the zone. Thursdays double run didn’t happen. I made it back from yoga just before a massive downpour and the lightening just isn’t my thing to run in! By Saturday I woke up and felt like I could sleep for 3 weeks. I decided not to run and did my 1.30 run on Sunday afternoon as a walk.

So this is what the week ended up looking like.

This week also needs to change because I am no longer going to Bangkok!

I have decided to stay in Penang until the 31 May because productivity wise I am powering through my other course and goals I want to complete. I realise that to shake it up and move when I am this close to finishing is probably not a good idea and plus when I head to Myanmar and Laos I just want to be a ‘tourist’ and a not worry if I have to do a Skype call or get some research done.

I am going to do 4 yoga sessions a week. Two Yin Yoga and two Hatha. Yin is literally my favourite style of yoga because it complements my endurance training. Nothing like doing hip openers after a week of running to get the body in tune!

This weeks weather doesn’t look nice again LOL but this is Penang and it is hot, humid and stormy!

I have also discovered that I am not tolerating certain foods. I no longer have good reactions to naan bread or too much Indian food. I am all good if I eat the Thali’s which have much more vegetables than sauce and rice instead of naan. Food don’t you know I love you why do you have to plague me with troubles??

I do feel very sorry for my coach with all my changes and weird shit. Oh I am off to this country, I want to include 4 sessions of yoga, and numerous other things I have put him through since he first started coaching me just over 19 months ago. He is currently training for IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship in Cairns on the 12 Jun 16. So I am trying not to be too much of a pain in the arse! I promise Coach!! But I am excited to start being mentored by him in the future. Dan is a very good coach and I couldn’t imagine a better guy to learn from!

So I can’t tell you want the end of this week will look like but fingers crossed it is green and happy!

Week 3 – Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to Ring the Bell

Week 2 is done and dusted and Week 3 is upon me.

So how was the past week. I failed to feel any love whatsoever with training this week which is ironic given I spent the week learning how to coach IRONMAN triathletes.

I did all my sessions except for the swim yet I hated almost ever bloody moment of it. It has been hot and humid and downright bloody horrible conditions to train in. Running on the roads/footpaths here is just horrendous!

I miss my trails around Noosa National Park, the forestry around my parents old house and mostly I miss running with my Skinny Dog.

Skinny didn’t always come running with me, she was 12 after all. But I loved taking her for little runs. I have felt very sad about her dying just before I left to come traveling and have even had a few nights where I just wanted to cry myself to sleep. Living in a dorm has made that one less likely. She was my best mate!

I did wonder this week if my emotional state and almost hatred of training had to do with anything else. Quite frankly it probably does. I have now been away from home 137 days or 4 months and 15 days. Not the longest I have been away for but still it is a long time.

I miss my Mumma! I miss my family, I miss cups of tea on the back porch and I miss home… As I have chosen to be traveling and away from home I guess I need to feel the feelings and then get on with it!

So what does Week 3 have install for me:

Can’t say I am excited about this week either but specificity is key (the coach loves that).

I do think the fact that I am missing crossfit and yoga are more the issues than just the running. I love the idea that I am going to be running 100km but it is through the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland and I am training in very different circumstance.

Okay okay I know I am whining and having a downright sob story but there is no use me coming on here and saying ‘yippy training is going bloody amazing’ when it is not. I am nothing if not authentic and I refuse to sugar coat that I am struggling to get up and train.

I do have some good news! I found a Yin Yoga studio not far from here… A much deeper internet search revealed a lot more yoga on Penang Island. Most of it is not accessible for the transport-less but Sunalini Yoga Studio is close by. So I will be hitting them up on Wednesday night!

So coach in all likelihood the chances of me swimming are slim, I will try and work on that! But I will get the rest done however messy it is.

Do you go through periods of the ‘I can’t be f**ked’ when your training? What do you do to overcome those feelings? I’d love to hear from you.

Tell then I am going to study, eat, train, sleep and repeat!

Week 2 – Operation Blackall 100 – Challenge to ‘Ring the Bell’

As you can see the week started off swimmingly and then come Friday I was not feeling well at all.  During Friday and Sundays workouts I was not feeling at all well. Friday I sensed that I was beginning to get unwell…to make matters worse I didn’t fully listen to my body and mind and went out on Friday night.

It was my last night in Kuala Lumpur with my friends and I didn’t want to stay home but stupidly instead of coming home after dinner I stayed out. I was already feeling under the weather so staying out till 3am (I never do this!) was plainly stupid!

Live and learn!

Saturday was a travel day which means I had 3 hours sleep and crap food. Saturday night I didn’t sleep well and come Sunday’s run I was sitting in the gutter dizzy and thinking I might pass out. I returned to the hostel and slept again. I spent the rest of the day drinking water, eating much better food and resting. I did go for a little stroll around George Town but didn’t push myself at all.

So Week 2 is upon me and I am feeling much better. In fact I got 10 hours sleep last night. Not sure if that is over sleeping but it has worked for me cause I feel pumped and rejuvenated today.

The swimming pool is proving difficult to find so that session may have to be later in the week. There is a pool but getting anyone to answer and give me a straight answer on timings is the difficult bit but I am still excited! Also tracking down yoga in town is proving a pain too. Two places used to have yoga but don’t anymore cause no-one wanted to do it… People no excuse!

Good news, I have started working at a co-working space in George Town, Penang therefore I am debating staying in Penang for month. So far, aside from the bloody humidity, it is proving cost effective and there are some great running trails (apparently) outside of town that I can explore on the weekend. For a month co-working space (desk and very fast internet is costing me $35.00 Australian! Pretty happy with that!

The weather forecast is not as happy!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.58.12 amOh and the UV Index for the week is 11…. I didn’t even know the UV Index went to 11 for Pete’s sake! Hot, sweating and burning.. Ah got to love life.
