Chris Guillebeau’s book, The Art of Non-Conformity, set me on a little adventure that has changed me. Chris loves travel probably more than anyone else I have read about. He is inspirational to a whole different set of people. I am still learning a lot about travel from him but before reading his book and subsequently joining his blog mailing list I would never have joined a frequent flyer program. I was too afraid to learn which is barking mad as it will save me money in the long time and add to my adventures.
Chris’s goal of 25 countries a year lead me to make a goal of 12 countries, 12 months. I plan to visit on country every month for the year of 2011. In a few weeks time I will be 6 for 6 and the planning for the next 6 months is well and truly in motion. Had I have not read Chris’s book that lead me to his website I likely would not have pushed to challenge myself with this goal.
When you find people that inspire you it gives you enthusiasm to live the life you want. The thing that impressed me about Chris was I sent him an email and he responded. Well I don’t know if it was him or an assistant to be honest but there was a response which increased my willingness to read his blog, buy his products and create a platform on which I wanted my traveling life to head towards.
I have always packed the kitchen sink along with the rest of the things I don’t need when I have travelled but after reading a blog by Chris I amended my packing list dramatically. I can now get away with 12 kgs instead of 32 kgs and I still don’t wear it all. The heaviest thing I take now is books, still haven’t developed any desire to us a kindle or e-reader, I love the feel of paper and I write in the books I read.
So this is my little thank you to Chris because without him telling the world his philosophies on travel I might not have got the gypsy feet actually moving and not just sitting on the couch watching the travel channel. I will admit its been exceedingly more accessible to travel now that I live in Dubai than from Australia. Life is an adventure, don’t miss it!
